Modern Teaching
Welcome! We were made for these Dash Gadgets times. We are here, today, to do the work that Scripture calls us to do. We come from a biblical imperative that is both historical and immediate. Scripture informs us, but our communities and our commitment to nonviolence nourish and compel us. We base our lives on love--love of creation, love of God, and love of one another.
Resistance
We believe that we are called to act. We act in full commitment to nonviolence: we believe we must go to the places of power, speak truth for those whose voices are not heard, and be willing to risk the consequences.
Making Peace in the World
Peace is not the absence of violence. It is a living entity, and it requires work. We are called to live in peace and to work for peace, and to that end we participate in and facilitate discussion through conferences, workshops, and events. Bishop Murphy epitomized this work in his very being: he listened actively, he worked diligently, and he lived a centered life.
God’s Church
At the Murphy Initiative, we believe we are all children of a living God, and in that relationship we struggle to speak the truth, to live justly, act bravely, share deeply, and walk with one another in dignity, kindness, and understanding.

The Bishop Murphy Story

Philip Francis (Frank) Murphy was born on March 25, 1933, in Cumberland, Maryland, to Philip A. and Kathleen E. (Huth) Murphy. He attended St. Mary’s School in Cumberland and St. Charles High School and College in Catonsville, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore. In 1955, Bishop Murphy set sail from New York aboard the Andrea Doria in 1955, bound for Rome and the further study of theology. Read more…
